History
St. James' Episcopal Church is located just two short
blocks from Main Street and Courthouse Square. The
present structure is the fifth Episcopal Church building in
Hamilton Parish and the second on this site. The earliest
church at Elk Run and a second, St. Mary's, close to
Warrenton, were abandoned and fell into decay.
A revival of interest in religious matters began with
Bishop Meade's 1812 visit to Warrenton, where he
preached in the Courthouse. In 1816, a frame church
was built on Alexandria Pike, just below the Courthouse.
The first Episcopal Church building within the town limits,
it became the parish church of Hamilton. Shortly after
1846, it was sold and in 1853, a brick church on
Culpeper Street was consecrated. The 1853 church was
designed by renowned New York architect, James
Renwick, Jr., a strong advocate of the Gothic Revival
style of architecture (such as his Smithsonian "Castle"). In
1910, a fire consumed the church and most of its
contents. However, utilizing the foundation and a
portion of the remaining walls, rebuilding proceeded
rapidly with a parish hall attached to the north side.
Services were resumed in 1912, although the church
was not consecrated until 1916.
St. James' is a stucco and brick building in the style of
an English parish church. Once inside the Gothic
interior, one sees the splendid stained glass Ascension
window above the Altar. Two windows were salvaged
from the fire of 1910, as were some of the furnishings,
including the brass pulpit and Communion rail. Today
St. James' is beautified with additional stained glass
windows, more than 300 needlepoint kneelers hand
stitched by parishioners, and other appropriate
furnishings to enrich the setting in which we worship.
One of the treasures of St. James' is a 17th century copy
of the King James Bible.
