What a fun, laid back summer we’ve had for Sunday School!
Although our program year ended in May, we got right back in the swing of things with a “one-room-schoolhouse” style summer program.
The stories have ranged from Joshua & Moses to crossing the Jordan River with the Ark of the Covenant and even David & Goliath.

Why sing in the choir? Well…why not? Choral singing extends much further than meeting once a week to sing through the notes on the page. The Saint James’ choral experience is one of a strong community, music education and history, as well as leadership.

Growing up, I loved sports. I still do. Despite having played a multitude of sports from an early age, I never rose to the level where watching and reviewing game film was prescribed. The most reflection that I can recall was when my tennis coach recorded me playing and had me watch the video with Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” (take a look at the man in the mirror AND MAKE A CHANGE) playing in the background.

This Sunday, we walked as a parish from Culpeper Street to Alexandria Pike to worship at First Baptist Church, and we are so grateful for their hospitality!

As a young clergyman in 1812 or 1813, the Rev. William Mead, who would later become the Bishop of Virginia, visited Hamilton Parish and found that there was no house of worship in Warrenton of any denomination.
Soon thereafter, he wrote that the Episcopalians were determined to build a church, and in 1816, a group of like-minded residents built a house of worship on the Alexandria Turnpike.

Who is Jesus?
In Sunday School today we focused on a bible reading from Mark. (Mark 8:27-38)
The kids heard Peter’s declaration and discussed the joys and challenges of following Jesus, the Messiah. We also talked about all the different names for Jesus and what each of them might tell us about him.
Even though there are many names for Jesus, there is only one Jesus to follow. (Jesus, the Messiah, Christ, Lord, Savior, Teacher, King…)

On Sunday, September 16th, we will not have our regular 10:15am service.
Instead, we will do something very special as a parish: we will be the guests of First Baptist Church at their 11:00am worship service. Everyone in the Saint James’ community is invited to come worship with our brothers and sisters on Alexandria Pike!
SPECIAL SCHEDULE FOR SEPTEMBER 16
- 8:00 – 8:30 AM | Holy Eucharist @ Saint James’
- 8:30 – 10:30 AM | Café @ Saint James’
- 9:00 – 10:45 AM | Nursery @ Saint James’
- 9:15 – 10:00 AM | Adult Formation @ Saint James’
- 10:00 – 10:45 AM | Adult Formation @ Saint James’
- 10:15 – 10:40 AM | Sunday School @ Saint James’
- 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM | Worship @ First Baptist Church
- no 10:15am Eucharist
- no coffee hour
Everyone – children, youth and adults – are invited. Especially because of the later service time, it’s certainly ok to leave the service early for sports or other previous commitments.
We hope that on September 16th, our usual 10:15am crowd – and ever those parishioners who usually attend the 8:00am service – will come worship together with the First Baptist community!

“All are welcome here”
What an appropriate lesson for our Homecoming Sunday!
God commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves. God calls us to view anyone who needs help as our neighbor. We don’t have to look hard to find a “wounded” person. They surround us in our family, our neighborhood, our church, our country, our world.
There are many ways to share God’s love. Ask your children what some of their ideas are.

On Homecoming Sunday on September 9th, we come home as the full parish community regathers after summer activities. We begin the program year. There is an excitement about seeing each other more often and participating in a fuller offering of activities.
A special treat this year is seeing the progress on our building and renovation project. The new restrooms are open!
On Homecoming Sunday, the schedule for the 10:15 Eucharist will be a little different. Early arrivals for worship are free to greet and talk with others. At 10:05 the bell will ring and the presider will ask for silence, which will provide time for personal prayers and listening to the prelude. The announcements will follow, then worship.
Finally, Homecoming Sunday will mark our commitment to the program year’s theme, “Come and See.” More about this later.

Saint James’ kicks off the season with back-to-back wins!
The Saint James’ coed softball team kicked off the rust and dust last night with two rousing wins against Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Delaplane.
Game one went 6 innings and ended in a 14-8 victory, and then we capped off the night with a 5-inning, 22-0 win! Nineteen different players contributed multiple hits, home runs, fantastic defensive plays, and laughs galore.
Thank you to everyone who came out to join us and followed us to Foster’s Grille for the after game party!
If you missed us this week, join us next Wednesday (July 18) as we take on our ‘oldest’ rivals, Oak View National Bank! (I think we’ve been playing this team since before the Federal Reserve was created!)
Game one start time will be 6:15pm at the Taylor Middle School Field (350 E Shirley Ave, Warrenton, VA 20186); game 2 will start around 7:15.
