Lammas Day, also known as Loaf Mass Day, is a Christian holiday celebrated in some English-speaking countries in the Northern Hemisphere on August. 1. The name originates from the word “loaf” in reference to bread and “Mass” in reference to the Holy Eucharist. It traditionally marks the start of the Harvest season. Originally, a new loaf of bread made from the first cut grain—the first fruit of the harvest brought back to God in gratitude—was brought to share in communion.

This year, with food prices soaring and grain supplies severely affected by the war in Ukraine, we are only too aware of the fragility of the food supply. Parts of the world are desperately reliant on those grain deliveries. “Lord, have mercy”

So, as you cut bread today, be especially thankful to God this Lammas time. Acknowledge the sinfulness of humanity that can make even food a weapon. And come in renewed faith to our God who is our Provider and the Lord of the nations. Pray with renewed meaning, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Peace and blessings.
