Fishers of Men

Today in Sunday School, your children heard the story of Jesus fishing for men. Based on the Gospel of Luke (Luke 5:1-11) Jesus chose his first disciples and taught them to fish for men.

Jesus was walking beside the lake of Gennersaret when he saw the boat of Simon and asked him to put it out just a little ways from shore. Then he sat down in the boat and talked to  the crowd. They were fishermen, Jesus told them to follow him and he would make them fishers of men. What Jesus meant was to have his disciples find more followers of Jesus who would love and serve others just as Jesus did.

We can become fishers of men too – by telling others about Jesus and spreading his love to others. We need to be willing to follow him and encourage others to do the same.

Table Talk Questions

  1. What does it mean to become a fisher of men?
  2. Why do you think Jesus wanted these men to follow him?
  3. These first followers of Jesus were willing to immediately leave their homes to follow Jesus – What might have been hard about that? What may have been great?
  4. What do you want to do as Jesus’ disciple?
