Those of us at St. James’, who have worked with the Fauquier Community Action
Committee, know what a wonderful job they do to make sure that needy Fauquier
families enjoy a happy Thanksgiving Day dinner. This year Esther Russell, the
Community Services Coordinator of FCAC, and volunteers from Warrenton who
assist her at peak times will fill 252 boxes (providing enough food for 826 people)
with the ingredients of America ’s traditional feast. Food is donated by local stores,
church and school groups, and individuals. To add a final important touch to each
box our Outreach Committee asks church members, both young and old, to provide
the turkey gravy, cans and cans of it! So, please, in the weeks ahead, add that
item to your shopping list. Some of you will remember that we provided the FCAC
Thanksgiving gravy several years ago. Please join us again in filling our gravy train
this year!
To help you in your search, you will find GIANT’s cans of turkey gravy on the lower
left shelf of Aisle 6, as you enter from the front of the store. They have several
brands, 10 cans of their own brand cost $10. At SAFEWAY the turkey gravy will
be found on Aisle 18. Again it’s on the lowest shelf to the right almost immediately
after entering the aisle. The selection is between their own brand at 5 for $5.00 or
Campbell ’s at $1.39. At BLOOM’S, look at the far end of Aisle 3, again on the
lowest shelf. They too have their own brand at $.79 and Campbell’s at $.99. In
each store a case of 24 costs the single can price times 24.
If you would enjoy becoming one of Esther’s volunteers at Thanksgiving time,
please ring her at 347-7000, ext. 110. Help is needed during morning hours from
November 12-16 in picking up the food donations which will fill the boxes, and on
November 19 and 20, Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, to help in the
distribution of the boxes. Spanish-speaking volunteers are most welcome! Working
with Esther is a delight!
Helping to provide food for others, who would have none without FCAC, is a
wonderful way to celebrate America ’s special holiday. Do ring Esther and let her
know if you can help. But even before that, remember to jot down cans of turkey
gravy on your shopping list during the weeks ahead. You may deliver it to the
church, leaving it at the spot designated in the Parish Hall, probably a small train
across the front of the stage.
