Missions 2009
June 27- July 5th
Update for Saturday, June 27th:
We have arrived safely and were graciously
welcomed by the Parrish family to a low country
boil. After enjoying fellowship under the live oak
trees and taking a dip in the river, we returned to
settle into evening worship where we sang songs,
accompanied by Julie's piano playing talents and
Chris on the guitar. We focused on our mission
and our spiritual directives as we set upon our
week. It is late and all the kids are in bed gearing
up for our big day that starts at 6 a.m.
Update for Sunday, June 28th:
Today really was church day for YMO. We began
our day with an optional 8 a.m. Sunday worship
service at our host church, Christ -St. Paul's Parish.
Afterwards, we attended morning services at
Wesley United Methodist Church where we were
moved by their hospitality and their energy. The
music was AMAZING! Today's services reinforced
our mission, connected us to the Hollywood
community and taught us about having faith in God
even in troubled times. We are clearly moved by the
spirit in the Hollywood community. We spent the
afternoon enjoying free time in Charleston,
returning for a light dinner and devotion. Keep us in
your prayers as we get ready for our first day on the
work site.
Update for Monday, June 29th
Wow, what a day! After a morning devotional, we
arrived on site after 7:30 a.m. We went straight to
work. What began as a hole in the ground ended
with a concrete foundation and the floors being
built. Our nurses and their young helpers set up
shade and drink stations rotating teams frequently
making sure that everyone was adequately
hydrated in the intense heat and humidity. We are
proud of our crew. They worked together and they
got their jobs done. Our cooking staff kept us well
nourished with delicious meals and kind smiles.
We are also extremely thankful for our children's
program. Everyone is doing an exceptional job.
After a hard day's work, we enjoyed a delicious
meal by the river. As you can see from the video, a
little rain may dampen the earth, but not our spirits.
Your prayers must be working, please continue.
Exciting things are happening as we are building a
house and building on our own individual spiritual
foundations.
Update for Tuesday, June 30th
Our second day on the work site was a busy one
and the foundation will be finished tomorrow
morning. Since being on site, the YMO crew has
worked side by side with the Smiley family who will
be living in the house. They have been kind offering
us drinks and popsicles and Shirley gives the best
hugs ever! The crews worked on the floors and
walls and their work was reviewed by inspectors.
You'll be glad to know, their work passed! The kids
are doing extremely well working together and
being industrious. We ended the day at the Rural
Missions Compound where we prayed, sang, and
ate some delicious southern food.
Update for Wednesday, July 1st
Wednesday is normally a hard day because the
kids are getting tired. Safety and hydration are
heavily emphasized on the work site. Father Chris
began the morning reminding us of the big picture
of our mission. Upon arriving on the work site,
Father Chris placed a green pocket cross in the
foundation and blessed the Smiley house. The
floors were put in place today and we are seeing
more progress on the structure. We enjoyed the
hospitality of the Coffins for dinner by the river and
joined our host church for a contemporary worship
service where we all felt the presence of God.
Thank you for your prayers. Please keep praying.
Update for Thursday, July 2nd
Our first wall is up. The intensely hot day was
accompanied by what seemed like an orchestra of
hammers. The younger children involved in the
children's program took a field trip to the site where
they rode the bus, sang songs, hammered on
some scrap boards and drank water at the shade
tent. We finished yet another day enjoying the fine
hospitality of the Christ St. Paul parish with
swimming and dinner. We returned to evening
worship where Father Chris reached out to all in
their spiritual journey. Strong foundations are being
built.
Update for Friday, July 3rd
Today was technically the last day on the work site,
but we just couldn't leave. We are sending a small
group of YMO youth and staff to work in the
morning. The day began with hammering
interspersed with spiritual discussions. People
were talking about the Holy Spirit and how they
have been affected this week. It has been an
amazing few days. Our words here do not do it
justice. Our souls have been enriched by the
Smiley family and we have all seen God here in
meaningful ways. This is a special place and we
are grateful to be here. We are grateful for each
other. Please keep us and the work that we are
doing in your prayers.
Update for Saturday, July 4th
Happy Fourth of July! It was a happy day indeed as
a small number of YMO staff and youth worked on
the Smiley house. We find ourselves at a point
where another crew will come next week to
continue the work that we have started. Today's
pictures provide only a small window of all that
occurred and so everyone may not be pictured, as
the groups were split apart with one team working
on the house and the rest of our group cleaning
our host church, Christ St. Paul. We joined forces
in the late morning and rode to a day at Camp St.
Christopher's, a private beach owned by the
Diocese of South Carolina. We rejoiced in good
food and relaxation. Our evening worship
concluded with discussions of returning home and
taking the blessings of this trip into our own lives.
We have all felt the presence of God and have
been in awe of that power. The task at hand for
each of us is what we will do with that knowledge.
Thank you for your prayers and thank you to all of
those who have given for this opportunity. We
return home tomorrow, travel weary but with full
hearts.
