Confirmation begins a journey that lasts a lifetime. Facing change, Jesus taught us a framework for faith, understanding and wisdom so that we could be who we were created to be in the world amid change, transformation and possibilities.

On April 3, 1932, at Christ’s Chapel on Baldwin Ridge Road (the mission church of Saint James’ consecrated in 1890), the confirmands were Mary Ines Ruffner, Jane Fitzhugh Gray, Elias Edmonds Gray Jr., LaClaire Gray and Charlotte Bladen Gray. The changes in the world they would encounter in their journey forward included the Great Depression, World War II and the implications of evolving Jim Crow laws.

As our new confirmation class enters this journey — the bishop will visit us in December — we will soon be called to do all in our power to support our newest confirmands in their life in Christ. As we pray for them, let us reflect on our own journey and the call to one Body, one Spirit, one Hope, One God.
